THE FAIR HOUSING RIGHTS CENTER IN SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA is a non-profit organization working to fight housing discrimination in the Greater Philadelphia area. They inform and advocate for people vulnerable to discrimination, campaign for fair housing policies, and audit the practices of discriminatory landlords and real estate agencies.

In 2018, the Center commissioned me to design billboards to advertise their services. My ideas for the concepts came from real experiences of their clients, many of whom I spoke to directly as part of the research process. For years, these billboards were displayed on highways and major streets across Philadelphia; according to my client, they have dramatically increased the Center’s call volume.
I completed this project over the course of several months in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I digitally painted the figures, each of which is an amalgamation of my imagination and several different reference photos. The backgrounds are composited images of environments that resemble Philadelphia neighborhoods served by the Center. I applied digital matte painting techniques to correct perspective, add texture and diegetic text, and create compelling lighting.
